There are certain reasons that made a person unfit for donating blood. These are:

Temporary Reasons
Once the symptoms of these transitory reasons subside, the person is again becomes fit for donating blood.
-- Not feeling well for any reason
-- Suffering from cold, sore throat, respiratory infection, flu etc
-- Difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, asthma - a donor should not suffer from any breathing problems at the time of donating blood
-- Antibiotics - a person is fit for donating blood, two days after the treatment is over
-- Blood transfusion - a person may safely donate blood after 1 year of receiving blood
-- Pregnant or lactating women or those who have recently had abortion, should avoid donation till fully recovered
-- Surgery, serious injury - when healing is complete
-- Sexually transmitted diseases like venereal disease, genital herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea
-- Have had sex with a male or female prostitute within the past twelve months
-- Measles, mumps, chicken pox - 3 weeks from day of exposure
-- Tuberculosis (T.B.) - 2 years after completion of treatment
-- Sniffed cocaine or any other restricted drugs within last 12 months
Permanent Reasons
Persons suffering from these conditions are completely refrained from donating blood:
-- Have used drugs by intravenous route (injecting directly in the vein), even once
-- If suffering from conditions like hemophilia, thalassemia or any other blood disorder
-- Have had cancer
-- Had a positive antibody test for HIV (AIDS Virus)
-- Commercial sex worker, totally avoid donating blood
-- Have had hepatitis any time after eleventh birthday
-- Have multiple sclerosis
-- If ever had coronary artery bypass surgery or myocardial infarction
-- Have had a stroke
-- In case of an organ failure (kidney, lung or liver)
